Singer-songwriter Anna Duboc took time to chat with us about her new song “On Your Mind,” whose accompanying music video premieres this Friday, her dreams of being on Broadway and working with Vixen Jamieson and Matias Mora.
You wrote your first song at 8 years old and have been working on music since. As you’ve gotten older how have you evolved as a songwriter and worked on finding your voice as a songwriter?
My songwriting has evolved over the years as I experience more life has to offer, both the good and the bad. As I have gone through both trauma and celebrations, the subject matter of my songs has changed and I’ve started to develop my own lyrical voice in the way I write my words. I know my songwriting style will continue to develop and stretch as I grow and become an adult (this year which is terrifying), but for now I am content with exploring new stylistic choices and enjoying the process of watching a song develop into something unique.
Tell our readers about your song “On Your Mind.” What story is the song telling?
“On Your Mind” was written about a situation I know many of the girls – and guys – around me have gone through, otherwise known as a situationship. In other words, I wrote “On Your Mind” about talking to a boy and realizing all they want is to hit you up whenever they feel like it to use you for, you know, their ~physical desires~
Did you learn a lot through collaborating with Vixen Jamieson and Matias Mora?
I always learn something new when working with Matias, whether it be about producing or my own songwriting process. Working with Vixen on this song was honestly just really really cool, the way she contributed to this song just brought it to life. Both of them are so talented and I am so lucky to get to work with them on my music.
Co-producing a track allows you to be even more involved in the song making process. How has producing influenced the music you’ve been making?
I’ve always produced my own music, but working with other producers like Matias has really helped me with the collaborative process (something I used to be very stubborn about).
